چکیده
Abstract Introduction Tracheostomy decannulation is an extremely important part of tracheostomy care in paediatric patients. Due to the increased risk morbidity1 (bleeding, respiratory infection, airway plugging, accidental decannulation) and mortality2 (0.5-3.6%) associated with prolonged tracheostomies, it strongly advised decannulate patient as soon underlying cause for placement corrected or resolved3. A simple navigate protocol required order establish a safe efficient way well knowing when how decannulate. The respiratory therapist plays an integral role in tracheostomy tube decannulation. Removal of the tracheostomy tube should be considered only if the original upper-airway obstruction is resolved, if airway secretions are controlled, and if mechanical ventilation is no longer needed. Predictors of success include ability to produce a vigorous cough and the absence of aspiration. Tracheostomy d...

BACKGROUND Although tracheostomy is probably the most common surgical procedure performed on critically ill patients, it is unknown when a tracheostomy tube can be safely removed. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional survey of physicians and respiratory therapists with expertise in the management of tracheostomized patients at 118 medical centers to characterize contemporary opinions about ...

Tracheostomy is a common surgical procedure, and is increasingly performed in the intensive care unit (ICU) as opposed to the operating room. Procedural knowledge is essential and is therefore outlined in this review. We also review several high-quality studies comparing percutaneous dilational tracheostomy and open surgical tracheostomy. The percutaneous method has a comparable, if not superio...
